Samme Raeymaekers

Artistic Director, December Dance and Artistic Coordinator Dance, Concertgebouw Dance Programme Cultural Centre Bruges, Belgium

Samme was appointed the artistic coordinator – dance for Concertgebouw Brugge in 2006. Concertgebouw has two stages, one performance venue / concert hall with 1,300 seats and one chamber music hall with 320 seats and three rehearsal studios. As part of his role, he is also the Artistic Director of December Dance, an (inter)national dance programme for all the venues in Bruges (Cultural Centre and Concertgebouw) and from where he curates, coordinates and organises the annual dance and performance festival.

Prior to this he was the performing arts presenter-programmer (dance, theatre and music) for the Cultural Centre / Royal City Theatre in Bruges with three performing arts venues: two black boxes (with 250 and 400 seats) and one theatre (with 700 seats). During this time, he participated in the project BRUGES 2002: European Cultural Capital of Europe.

Curatorial statement

December Dance is considered the biggest dance festival in Flanders with a very clear concept: every uneven year I invite an internationally acclaimed choreographer as curator of the festival. Together and in dialogue we build the programme. Every other year I focus on the contemporary dance scene from a certain region or country. Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui (’07), Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker (’09), Akram Khan (’11), Wim Vandekeybus (’13), Jan Fabre (’15) and Christian Rizzo (’17) were curators in the past and I have focused on Québec/ Montréal (’08), Central Europe (’10), the Nordic (’12), Asia (’14) and UK (’16)

Within the festival and the season programme I present approximately 45 dance productions, including international and national companies, and emerging and established artists.
